The Ontology Project is an amazing new collection of routines and a revolutionary new approach to card magic. Consisting of five pieces of professional magic, the Ontology Project also includes utility tools capable of creating countless effects, limited only by your imagination. Whether you are a professional magician, performing mentalist or card enthusiast, the Ontology Project will provide you with mind-blowing magic, diabolical methods, and will inspire an entirely new way of thinking about card magic.

You will receive an elegant booklet and a collection of 54 cards that allows you to perform the following effects:

  • DEEPEST SYMPATHY: Arguably the cleanest and most deceptive version of the Sympathetic Cards plot ever devised.
  • TRIUMPHANT: An unbelievable addition to Dai Vernon’s timeless classic, Triumph.
  • FORCE OF NATURE: Based on Charles Reynolds’ “Force of Thought” this is the perfect utility weapon magicians and mentalists alike. Included are two routines guaranteed to devastate: A spectator merely thinks of a card in the deck and the magician is able to instantly tell them what card they are thinking of and a perfect prediction.
  • CART BEFORE THE HORSE: A signed card to impossible location that brings a Bro. John miracle into the 21st century.

This little book of miracles will give you the necessary means to blow anybody out of the water. If you know Helder, then you will know that all of his routines are exceedingly well thought-out and the method behind it is very diabolical. The ontology project is no exception, some of the routines are easy to perform whereas others are not. If you put in the necessary practice, you will be able to fool the greatest skeptic and magicians. Like Bill Malone says: "Get the Ontology project for your audience, they deserve it".

Helder Guimarães is the 2006 winner of the FISM World Championships in card magic. The Portuguese self-described “Lateral-Thinking Artist” released an excellent DVD last year, Red Mirror. When I opened this nicely-packaged item I was surprised to find no DVD. Instead there was a fully colour illustrated booklet and a deck of what appeared to be Bicycle Rider Back cards. But that deck consists in actuality of 54 gaffed cards – some special double facers, split facers, mis-indexed cards and a same-both sides Joker.

These are so you can perform the four effects in the booklet, effects which Helder worked out with Derek DelGaudio. These include cards for the Sympathetic Card trick (a number of cards are mixed, placed in a wine glass, and when covered for a second are shown to match the order of cards in another wine glass); Triumphant (the classic with a kicker to show the deck in new deck order); two versions of the Force of Nature card force (a combination of Charles Reynolds’s Force of Thought deck with Chris Kenworthy’s Mastermind deck (Chris is uncredited, although the idea goes back to Annemann); and Card Before the Horse (a nice variation of Brother John Hamman’s “The Signed Card”).

These are all excellent effects. Although Nate Leipzig is correctly credited for the first trick, I was surprised to see no mention of Derek Dingle, whose version appeared in his Complete Works. But the cards for the Dingle version have been unavailable for years and the ones in this set, while different, do the trick.

The questions with heavily gaffed decks are always how does the space they take up in your jacket compare to the impact of the effect, and how good are you at keeping the spectator’s grubby hands away from the cards. The effects require minimal sleight-of-hand.

This deck and booklet represent some good thinking and good value for money.

I got the Ontology Project for Christmas and I think it is great. Each and every trick that comes with it is amazing, my favorite being Cart Before Horse. It is a version of Bro. John Hamman's Signed Card, and it is one of my favorite plots in card magic.

This product does require some advanced knowledge such as the Zarrow Shuffle, and the gaffed joker that comes with the Ontology deck does not match the jokers that come with the standard Bicycle rider back Decks. This is easily fixed, but something to keep in mind.

All in all, I would recommend this product to intermediate level students of magic. Definately not a beginner item. It is one of the best magic items I have received in a while.

This is a deck which contains a collection of fantastic tricks which are simple and easy to learn. The booklet is clear and there are a lot of photos to keep you on track. I especially like the "Force of Nature" trick which always gets great reactions. However good you are this is a great addition to your magic library. I would recommend this to any magician for its simplicity. The only down side is the fact that there are only 4 tricks included making it slightly expensive but still definitely worth buying!

I am lucky to have already received my copy from Helder himself, and all I can say is it delivers. Although the number of tricks that you'll receive out of the box isn't all that impressive, the quality and the amount of thought and creative detail that must've gone into them is nothing short of amazing. The deck also paves a way for you to be creative in your own right and experiment in new directions. Overall, despite what your skill level may be, this is effortless effectiveness right here, and just what you need to step-up your game.
