The Ontology Project is an amazing new collection of routines and a revolutionary new approach to card magic. Consisting of five pieces of professional magic, the Ontology Project also includes utility tools capable of creating countless effects, limited only by your imagination. Whether you are a professional magician, performing mentalist or card enthusiast, the Ontology Project will provide you with mind-blowing magic, diabolical methods, and will inspire an entirely new way of thinking about card magic.
You will receive an elegant booklet and a collection of 54 cards that allows you to perform the following effects:
- DEEPEST SYMPATHY: Arguably the cleanest and most deceptive version of the Sympathetic Cards plot ever devised.
- TRIUMPHANT: An unbelievable addition to Dai Vernon’s timeless classic, Triumph.
- FORCE OF NATURE: Based on Charles Reynolds’ “Force of Thought” this is the perfect utility weapon magicians and mentalists alike. Included are two routines guaranteed to devastate: A spectator merely thinks of a card in the deck and the magician is able to instantly tell them what card they are thinking of and a perfect prediction.
- CART BEFORE THE HORSE: A signed card to impossible location that brings a Bro. John miracle into the 21st century.
Helder Guimarães is quickly becoming recognized as one of magic’s great magic minds and performers. His victory at FISM in 2006 drew the attention of many because his effects were so diabolical, the judges thought he might have used stooges! Shades of the brilliant Lennart Green, no less. More recently, however, he has been doing some of the best and most diabolical magic extant at various conventions and at the Magic Castle. His projects for magicians are of exceptional value, all of his videos are excellent and contain thinking of the highest order, which will definitely catch you off guard, his writings include cutting edge thinking and theory, and his recent Ontology Project is a collection of real miracles, no kidding.

These are so you can perform the four effects in the booklet, effects which Helder worked out with Derek DelGaudio. These include cards for the Sympathetic Card trick (a number of cards are mixed, placed in a wine glass, and when covered for a second are shown to match the order of cards in another wine glass); Triumphant (the classic with a kicker to show the deck in new deck order); two versions of the Force of Nature card force (a combination of Charles Reynolds’s Force of Thought deck with Chris Kenworthy’s Mastermind deck (Chris is uncredited, although the idea goes back to Annemann); and Card Before the Horse (a nice variation of Brother John Hamman’s “The Signed Card”).
These are all excellent effects. Although Nate Leipzig is correctly credited for the first trick, I was surprised to see no mention of Derek Dingle, whose version appeared in his Complete Works. But the cards for the Dingle version have been unavailable for years and the ones in this set, while different, do the trick.
The questions with heavily gaffed decks are always how does the space they take up in your jacket compare to the impact of the effect, and how good are you at keeping the spectator’s grubby hands away from the cards. The effects require minimal sleight-of-hand.
This deck and booklet represent some good thinking and good value for money.
This product does require some advanced knowledge such as the Zarrow Shuffle, and the gaffed joker that comes with the Ontology deck does not match the jokers that come with the standard Bicycle rider back Decks. This is easily fixed, but something to keep in mind.
All in all, I would recommend this product to intermediate level students of magic. Definately not a beginner item. It is one of the best magic items I have received in a while.
