The Paper Engine

Tension, Focus and Design in Card magic

"The Paper Engine is one of the best books of card magic that I have ever read." - Michael Close

The engine this book discusses has fifty-two parts. Its gears and pistons are spades and clubs. It is lubricated with hearts and diamonds. It is fueled by skilled fingers and deft imagination. And when it is started it carries its passengers to fantastic lands. It has had countless operators during the six centuries of its existence. This book follows the innovations and fine tunings of one of its newest exponents, Aaron Fisher.

Larry Jennings remarked that Aaron Fisher was the most promising young card magician he had seen in the past twenty years. John Thompson, in his introduction to this book, says, "The material in this book is top notch, and I guarantee it will enhance the repertoire of any serious student of card magic immensely." These sorts of opinions have been spreading through the inner circles of card magic for several years, resulting in a growing demand for information on the techniques and card magic devised by Aaron Fisher, with which he has been impressing and amazing audiences of all calibers.

The Paper Engine begins with a thorough explanation of Aaron Fisher's handling of the half pass, a handling unlike any other in that there are no broad turns, sweeps or squaring of the cards used to hide the sleight. Aaron Fisher's gravity half pass is done in the small motion of raising the deck from dealing position to the fingertips. There is no other perceptible action and the sleight is invisible from all sides. The details of this one move have been wondered about and coveted for years.

Equally innovative are Aaron Fisher's approaches to the bluff pass, diminishing lift sequence, multiple shift, switches, and controls. And last but not least is his one-handed method for causing a card to pop face-up suddenly from the center of a face-down pack.

The Paper Engine, though, is much more than a collection of technical innovation. Supporting the sleights are nineteen excellent and powerful tricks that rely on them. These are not mere constructions cobbled together to illustrate how the sleights might be applied. The tricks are all audience-tried-and-tested pieces of magical entertainment, drawn from Aaron Fisher's professional repertoire. And all sleights and tricks are supplemented with observations on presentation, practicality, psychology, and theatrical theory, expressed with a clarity and candor that will surprise readers.

The Paper Engine is Aaron Fisher's first book, and for it he has chosen only what he considers his top card material, to which he has added two exceptional tricks by Gordon Bean that use his techniques.Aaron Fisher and his co-author John Lovick have striven to provide a text that teaches clearly and succinctly on many levels. They are aided in this by Damon Webster who supplies 160 state-of-the-art photos. The result is a work that, rather than spinning its wheels in well-worn ruts, drives the craft of card magic forward into the future.

I got this for my birthday recently and as soon as I started reading it I could not put this baby down. I have known of some of these slights and routines before but he tweaks them to perfection. Not everything he was trying to say was clear at certain points, but after a good reread I were able to understand. Needless to say after reading, attempting sleights, rereading how to make them better, then practicing over and over five hours quickly passed. I had a test the next day and it was midnight and I still could not put it down. Over all if you want sleights, philosophy, and a keen understanding of what magic is, buy this book!

Wow!! What a book! Fantastic magic and even better sleights, all from the mind of the wonderful Aaron Fisher. The information, for a card man, is invaluable. An exceptional course on card magic for the intermediate who wants to push himself/herself further along the famous Royal Road. No matter what card magic you perform, there is something in The Paper Engine by Aaron Fisher that will be useful to you.

This book is wonderful. You will use everything in it. I love everything from the One-handed Pop Over, which is not as hard as it looks, to the wonderful Gravity Half Pass. I use all the tricks, methods and controls. There is no filler in this book. It is pure and great magic. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Paper Engine won't scare you off with threats of 'knuckle-busting card sleights' while at the same time, it teaches you the ballsy, devious subtleties you would get if you sat at the feet (and took the abuse) of the old-time card masters in pursuit of the 'real work' of the craft. There are a few things in here that Aaron explains as well or better than some who have been doing it for decades, with photos matched exactly to where you need to see 'the moment' as it happens. This stuff won't scare you off. But it will take simple principles, and using simple words, make you a far better magician than you were when you started.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: The Paper Engine is possibly my best purchase in magic thus far. The material and thoughts in the book have helped me develop my own personal view on how magic should be. I've come to develop my own style of performing, something a lot of other products simply can't offer. After reading The Paper Engine I've also found that I've become more relaxed when performing magic and I'm no longer tightening up around the shoulders every time I know in my head a sleight is going on. I think The Paper Engine will be one of the few books to go down as a 'great' in the magic world. If you don't already own this, you're missing out.
